Practically everyone knows someone who owns an iPod nano or has seen the commercial for these cute compact collector gadgets. Apple computer did not expect the success that the iPod nano ended up getting, but because of the high enthusiasm that the consumer exhibited during its release it surprised many a critic. Designed as a replacement for the iPod mini the iPod Nanos were intended as a middle of the road iPod product, however with more space and more features than the iPod shuffle and less so for the traditional iPod. Because of the popularity of the iPod new ones that are for sale are close to retail if not full retail prive and your would be hard pressed to find a cheap iPod.

As far as the press was concerned, the unveiling of the iPod nanos came as more of a shock, due to the fact that even though they were expecting an iPod that utilized flash memory, no one even remotely was able to predict that Apple Computer would totally replace the iPod minis with iPod nanos. Even though iPod minis were still selling strong, there did not seem like there was a reason to phase out a successful product even with the invention of a new one. However, the bold move that Apple Computer undertook ended up being a successful one, due to the fact that this miniature device has become so popular and is even noted for durability and quality, despite initial challenges with the screens being scratched on the iPod nanos.

The Evolution of the IPod Nanos

At first, it was difficult to find some accessories for iPod Nanos because in order to allow for the smaller size of the items, Apple had to eliminate the remote connector found at the top of older models like the iPod minis, which most of the accessories at that time used. Now, things such as FM transmitters and remotes are being made that interface with the devices through the docking port. The inner workings of iPod Nanos are different from their predecessors, as well. The big change under the hood was the switch from a tiny hard drive to the use of flash memory to store the songs.

Because flash memory is generally about the size and thickness of a postage stamp, this immediately gave designers the leeway to shrink the iPod Nanos down to about the size that’s a little longer and more slender than a credit card. Even though the iPod nano is smaller when compared to the iPod mini, Apple Computer has surprisingly managed to give it a color screen that provides superior resolution with the evolution to the iPod nano. It is because of basic changes in design and implementation without the need to sacrifice needed function that made iPod nanos such a success that oath pleasantly surprised consumers and gave Apple Computer the ability to decisively remove its predecessor, the iPod mini, from the consumer market.
